Gravity Drip Irrigation That Actually Runs at 4 PSI
Standard drip hardware chokes below 10 psi. Here is the layout, filtration and emitter choice that waters 1,800 square feet off a tank on a stand.

Most homestead drip systems fail for the same reason: the hardware on the shelf is designed for 25 psi municipal water and you are feeding it from a tank ten feet in the air.
Pick the right emitters and design the headers properly and 4 psi is plenty.

1.Get the tank as high as you safely can
Every foot of elevation is 0.433 psi. Ten feet gives you 4.3 psi, which is workable; four feet does not. Build the stand for the full weight of water — 1,000 gallons is over 8,000 pounds.
2.Filter, but filter for gravity
A standard screen filter eats most of your pressure. Use an oversized disc filter rated for low-pressure flow, and clean it far more often than a pressurized system would need.

3.Oversize the headers, shorten the runs
1-inch header tubing to each zone, and keep individual drip runs under 60 feet. Friction loss in the run is what causes the far end of a bed to stay dry — you cannot fix it with a longer watering time.
4.Choose pressure-compensating emitters rated from 3 psi
Most PC emitters need 10 psi to open. The low-pressure versions start at 3 and give you even output from the first emitter to the last. This is the single most important part choice in the system.
5.Zone it and time it by feel
Two or three small zones water more evenly than one large one at low pressure. Run a zone for an hour, then dig down four inches with your hand and check. Adjust from the soil, not the clock.

- Can drip irrigation run without a pump?
- Yes, with low-pressure emitters rated for 4–10 psi and a tank raised two to four feet above the beds.
- How high does the tank need to be?
- Two feet of elevation gives roughly 1 psi. Four feet is the practical minimum for even flow across a run of beds.
- Will gravity drip clog?
- Only without filtration. A 200-mesh filter ahead of the manifold and an annual line flush keeps emitters clear.
